Easy homemade gifts

1. Homemade peppermint extract

Take clean, fresh mint leaves, fill a mason jar, crush with the handle of a wooden spoon to release the oils, fill to the top with a clear liquor of your choice, and put on the lid. Let it sit for a month or two (two is better). Strain into gift jars. Give to your favourite baker.

2. Herbal buttermilk bath soak

8 cups Epsom salts
4 cups Buttermilk powder
1/2 cup each of Chamomile and Lavender
OR 2 Tbsp of Cinnamon and 1/2 cup of Apple mint
1-2 cups of rose petals

Grind the herbs in a food processor or coffee grinder until you get a fine powder. Combine with buttermilk powder and Epsom salts. Put in fancy jars. Use one cup at a time.

3. Recycled crayons

What you need- old crayons, clean tins, chocolate/candy/soap molds, an oven

Clean the paper off your old crayons and separate them by colour. To melt they need to be separate or they'll end up sludge brown, not multicoloured. Separate the crayons into separate tins and place on a baking tray (to make sure there's no spillage because it's hard to clean up. Set the stove to 300F and put the tray of tins in the oven for about ten minutes. If they're still not melted return to the oven for a few more minutes. Pour carefully into chocolate/candy/soap molds. At this step you can dribble in different colours into one mold if you like. Let cool overnight. If they're hard to pop out you can put them in the freezer for a few minutes, but not too long because it will make the crayons brittle. If this really excites you there are all kinds of soap and candy/chocolate molds available for sale online.

4. Homemade dryer balls

5. Homemade butter

Cultured or uncultured butter

All you need is cream, a jar, and a bit of patience. Mix some honey into the final product for a decadent treat on scones, or dried herbs for something more savoury.
