Different apple sauce recipes

If you've been storing apples it might be time to start using them up before they go bad. You can make up some of these recipes and freeze them, or can them... Or, like at my house, just eat so much apple sauce that you feel oogy.

One tip: You can leave the peels on and just blend them in. It adds more fibre and nutrients to your sauce. Plus, it reduces the processing time by 2/3.

Another tip: You can use either the crock pot or the stove top, but you don't need to add as much liquid to the crock pot.

Last awesome tip: It's possible to water bath can any fruit, so this sauce can be easily preserved.

You almost don't really need a recipe for this. You have apples, and once they're cored they're ready to go. You put them in a pot on the stove, or in a crock pot, and cook them until they're extremely soft. If it's on the stove don't turn the heat too high or the apples could burn. In a crock pot put it on low overnight, or all day. Make sure you stir it once in a while. I use a hand blender to really smooth things out.
If you want sweeter apple sauce you can add honey, cider, maple syrup, or canned apple juice from the store (to taste), and lemon juice if you want it more tart. You can add cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, mace, cloves, vanilla (extract or bean), pumpkin pie spice from the store, ginger, and fruit in any combination you like. Although, don't go overboard on any of the spices. They tend to infuse the sauce over time and can become a bit overwhelming. Any fruit or spice that you'd put into an apple pie will be amazing. Foraged rosehips would be kind of awesome in this, too, actually.

Then, follow proper canning procedure if that's the way you're going. Otherwise, just bung it into a cleaned up yoghurt container and store it in the fridge for a week, or the freezer for up to a year.

Experiment and find your own favourites! It makes great gifts, too.
